After 43 years selling cars I’ve come to realise |
|
|
For example you may ask if a car has ABS. The salesman may confirm
the car has ABS but rarely will they explain what it does. ABS is an
important safety feature. However a 2005 survey found half the
respondents didn’t know what ABS does. Another example is when customers enquire about a car’s performance they only ever seem to ask the engine size – nothing else. There’s more to a car’s performance than engine size and customers should know to avoid disappointment. There are endless examples. The what, whys and wherefores of this situation boil down to the fact there is a communication problem between salesman and customer. Customers dismiss a lot of what salesmen say as sales-talk. The salesman feels this so limits what they say. Sales people don’t want to appear patronising or pushy. Salesmen assume customers know the benefits of car features whilst customers pretend they know. Yet a survey showed only 1% knows what ESP is. The outcome is only a small amount of information is transmitted by the salesman and only part of the information is received by the customer. The answer is to make information available in bite sized writing which is what I’m attempting here. The advantages of writing are: Clear and explicit. Open to careful consideration. Mistakes can be identified and rectified. Avoids omissions, misinterpretation, and misunderstanding. Refer back. Evidence of what’s been said. I’ll leave you with the thought; clearer documents improve your access to benefits and services, and a fair deal. If you understand what you read you make better choices and know exactly what you’re letting yourself in for. I
nearly forgot to tell you
