Renault says
there are four aspects to car safety – |

|
The press have made massive efforts to educate drivers about 4×4/SUV
safety. They have also published poor NCAP crash ratings for
4×4/SUVs and MPVs. The only advantage these types of vehicles have is their elevated view of the road, giving them greater anticipation which prevents accidents. However, I personally think a lot of the driver’s attention is taken by trying to keep a large vehicle in its lane. On balance I don’t believe they have an advantage in accident prevention. The big disadvantage of 4×4/SUVs is their steering, handling and stability in an emergency. A NHTSA study in the US, showed an ESP (Electronic Stability Programme) correction system could reduce single SUV accidents by 67%. Where drivers really need education is in their beliefs about crash protection. If you go onto the NCAP website you’ll be amazed at some of the ratings. To give you an idea of how far behind some cars are – new models launched after 1997 should have achieved a four-star rating. Renault cars launched after 2001 have achieved a five-star rating. You’ll find large cars you expect to be as safe as possible, only get a four-star rating, some only three. You’ll also find some cars launched in recent years only have a four-star rating. You may notice certain manufacturers are not delivering what they could, while others are fast catching up with Renault’s achievements in car safety. According to Bosch, the safest car possible today is a five-star rated car WITH ESP. You’ll find it is standard on the better or more powerful, more expensive large European cars. In the lower price more competitive market, European manufacturers have lowered prices for ESP as an option. Renault was the cheapest at under £400.
