Bosch say the
Electronic Stabilty Program (ESP) supports the driver in nearly all
critical driving situations. It detects skidding instantaneously and
actively counteracts it. ESP goes beyond ABS and traction control
systems (TCM). Sensors read desired steering direction, the vehicles
rotary movement and lateral accelerations.
Only 1% of those
surveyed identified ESP are aware of ESP as an active - corrective -
safety system.

ESP helps prevent skid related accidents, which is the main cause of fatal car accidents. Vehicles with a gross weight of more than 3.5 tons will also have to fit predictive emergency braking and lane departure warning systems. In 2006 about 39,500 people lost their lives on European roads, down from 50,000 in 2001. The fitting of ESP in all vehicles will help reduce fatal accidents even further.
