This one-box car concept was carried forward in the 1996 Renault Scenic which resembled the Espace with its easy access, an elevated view of the road and great versatility. The difference was the Scenic was built on the Megane platform and was more compact, cheap to buy and run. The Scenic launch was followed by the cheaper Citroen Picasso. Both only had 5 seats with no 7 seat option. Not being among the 7-seaters they were described as multi-purpose vehicles - MPVs.

Again many other manufacturers followed but the compact Vauxhall Zafira had 7-seats and was eventually more successful which caused Renault and Citroen to add Grand 7-seats options.

Compact MPVs need not be 7-seaters. MPVs are defined by having better versatility than other body styles with well thought out spacious interiors and seats which can be individually folded or even removed.
